Breaking the Myth: The Path between IB and Indian Universities

The IBDP students of Pathways Schools have gained admissions to prestigious universities in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, France, Panama, Singapore and UAE. They have also joined India's leading colleges. IB Diploma Programme is officially recognized in India. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognizes the IB Diploma as equivalent to the Plus Two (10+2) Class of the Senior Secondary School, which is the eligibility criterion for admission to the undergraduate courses in India. The IB issues Indian equivalent percentages for the IBDP grades to those students who intend to apply to Indian universities.

In most Indian universities, admissions are over by mid-June. However, the IBDP results are declared only on July 6. While overseas universities grant admission on the basis of predicted grades, most Indian universities require the final mark sheets issued by the Board. On our part, the School writes to colleges to which students seek admission, providing details like students' predicted grades, evidence of AIU recognition and the IBDP results timeline. The Mumbai University issues Provisional Statement of Eligibility Certificates to IBDP students, which facilitates admission of students to the various colleges and professional institutions affiliated to Mumbai University without the submission of the final grade results issued by the IB, on the grounds that the IB declares results late vis-à-vis the University’s admission timelines.

As per announcement made by Mumbai University in January 2008, IB Diploma students with Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level and Chemistry at Standard Level are eligible to apply for Bachelor of Engineering (except for Chemical Engineering) at colleges affiliated to it. Similarly, those IB Diploma candidates with Mathematics at HL, Chemistry at HL and Physics at SL are eligible to apply for Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. Further, the IB Certificate holders will also be eligible to apply for various courses under the faculty of Arts/Commerce/Science at colleges affiliated to Mumbai University.

An IBDP student is able to appear for the entrance examinations for admission to professional courses like engineering, medicine, management, law, etc., in India.

ACT, SAT, CLAT, and Other Commonly Taken Entrance Examinations for Undergraduate Programs

- **Purpose:** The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It assesses a student's readiness for college and is accepted by most colleges and universities. - **Sections:** The ACT consists of four sections - English, Math, Reading, and Science. There is also an optional Writing section. - **Scoring:** Each section is scored on a scale of 1 to 36, and the composite score is the average of these section scores.
- **Purpose:** Similar to the ACT, the SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States. - **Sections:** The SAT includes Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW), Math, and an optional Essay section. - **Scoring:** The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, combining the EBRW and Math scores. The Essay is scored separately.
- **Purpose:** CLAT is an entrance examination in India for admission to undergraduate law programs at various national law universities. - **Sections:** CLAT typically includes sections on English, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Mathematics, Legal Aptitude, and Logical Reasoning. - **Scoring:** The exam is scored out of 150 marks, and the scores are used for admission to participating law universities.
- **Purpose:** Conducted in India, JEE Main is an entrance exam for admission to various undergraduate engineering programs. - **Sections:** JEE Main includes sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. - **Scoring:** The total score is based on the performance in all three sections. JEE Main scores are used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other engineering institutions.
- **Purpose:** NEET is the entrance examination for undergraduate medical and dental programs in India. - **Sections:** NEET includes sections on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology). - **Scoring:** The total score is based on the performance in the Biology and Chemistry sections.
- **Purpose:** IELTS is widely used for assessing the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is often required for admission to universities in English-speaking countries. - **Sections:** IELTS includes four sections - Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. - **Scoring:** Each section is scored on a scale of 0 to 9, and the overall band score is the average of these section scores.
- **Purpose:** Similar to IELTS, TOEFL assesses the English language proficiency of non-native speakers and is commonly required for admission to universities in English-speaking countries. - **Sections:** TOEFL consists of four sections - Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. - **Scoring:** The total score is on a scale of 0 to 120, with individual section scores contributing to the overall score.
- **Purpose:** CUET is an entrnce exam conducted in Bangladesh for admission to undergraduate programs in various universities. - **Sections:** CUET typically includes sections on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English. - **Scoring:** The exam is scored out of 200 marks. Each section contributes to the total score, and universities may use these scores for admission.
- **Purpose:** UCAT is used for admission to undergraduate medical and dental programs in the United Kingdom and some other countries. - **Sections:** UCAT assesses cognitive abilities, including Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, and Situational Judgment. - **Scoring:** The scores vary for each section, and universities may use the UCAT scores along with other admission criteria.
- **Section A - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs):** This section assesses a candidate's ability to comprehend information, draw inferences, interpret passages, and critically evaluate arguments. It includes questions based on reading passages, and candidates are required to choose the correct answers. - **Section B - Essay Writing:** In this section, candidates are given a choice of essay questions and are required to write an essay in response. This part of the test evaluates the candidate's ability to express ideas, construct arguments, and communicate effectively in writing.
