As part of Unit 1 – Numerical Reasoning in Mathematics, we MYP 2 students worked on a project based on the topic “Cost-effective and sustainable travel”. This project revolved around planning a trip for 10 days in the upcoming winter holidays to 3 different countries in Europe considering various parameters like cost-effectiveness, eco-sustainable destinations, and sustainable travelling. By the end, we were expected to develop a product; a brochure/video showcasing the research of 3 different destinations, places to visit, and cost analysis of travel expenses.
We started off with detailed research, formulating an action plan, and designing and planning the end product. All along, we recorded our research, mathematical reasoning, and calculations in a weekly process journal allowing us to keep track of the weekly tasks. The initial stages of the project included researching countries to visit, shortlisting main attractions to visit in the given days, and looking for suitable accommodation keeping in mind the cost-effective and sustainable aspects which was the base for the project. Based on the shortlisted attractions and accommodation, we prepared the itinerary, and determined travel and daily expenses like average daily expense, total travel expenses in the local currency of the destination and Indian currency, and cost comparison of food, hotel, travel, etc. Finally, we designed the end product, a brochure presenting the research on 3 countries and cost calculations for our family to be able to use for travel planning.
During the process, my peers and I got the opportunity to enhance the various ATL skills and learner profile attributes pertaining mainly to self-management skills, time-management skills, and research skills. More importantly, it helped us to learn the need to work in a team effectively by managing roles and responsibilities. The project helped us to recapitulate and strengthen our understanding of mathematical operations by simulating a real-life scenario. The assignment was a great learning experience to understand how a trip is planned in real life and how travel expenses are calculated for budgeting purposes. The assignment was a great way to re-learn, re-cap, and re-apply numerical reasoning putting our understanding to the test while also having fun to plan winter holidays, design a brochure, and exhibit the PBL product to a wider audience.
