Last week marked the beginning of a new adventure for students across MYP: an immersion into EG, a short form for the Enrichment Group. This year the EG categories consisted of Completing an Online Course, Content Creation, Contribution Towards the Community, Mastering an Art Form, and Innovation, giving students plenty to think about.
Instead of teaching students a set syllabus and subjects, EG gives students the freedom to choose their subject of interest and make a difference in their chosen field. This sets them up for success by encouraging a special, realistic mindset applicable to the real world and important collaboration skills.
With EG starting, students went to their allocated classes and groups. This week consisted mostly of brainstorming and embarking on a massive journey; students began thinking about what differences they could make, how they could change the world around them, and how they could approach the numerous opportunities of the real world.
Week 1: An Overview
Before anything else, all students in all EGs took a personality test to determine how they worked in groups, their style of working, and their approach to life overall.
In all EGs, students considered the different mindsets and skills they would need to enter the world of success in their chosen topic. The whole approach is to be open-minded and receptive to new ideas.
Remember, as a famous saying goes, minds are like parachutes, they only function when they are open. EG offers the ideal space for these young minds to take off.
Let the adventures begin!
Here are the highlights of some of the many EGs that took place last week:
EG Innovation:
Innovation, as defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary:
1. A new idea, method, or device:
NOVELTY
2. The introduction of something new
In EG innovation, students began by learning the value of documentation and planning before jumping to create; they started researching what new things they could bring to the table.
All breakthroughs in the world start with someone getting curious and poking around with a purpose. Good research is key to any meaningful innovation, hence the emphasis on it as part of the EG process.
Students were introduced to how to imaginatively work and create new ideas in the 21st century. We live in an age where technology is changing and transforming the world around us at the speed of light. It becomes important to engage with this technology and learn to use it to our advantage. One of the focus areas in the EG session was how to work with new tech instead of against it.
By the end of the session, all students had established a process journal and a plan and peeked into the fascinating world of design, technology, and innovation.
Additionally, they were given the opportunity to join Launchpad, a program with workshops training students on how to craft a successful business idea, and how to transform it into a game-changing innovation. Launcpad is a unique initiative by Aryan Nangia, a DP 1 student at PSG who has the indepth understanding of what it takes to build a “Start-Up”.
EG Content Creation
When you think of content creation, what comes to your mind? Although the term may seem broad and vague, viewing it as such can be a good thing!
In EG content creation, students embarked on their journey through process journals, understanding the significance of documenting their thoughts and ideas by decoding others’ process journals. They explored inventive methods of raising awareness, crafting diverse content, and effectively conveying their work to a wider audience.
Throughout the process, students learnt the value of a growth mindset, identified common real-world problems, and discovered ways to address these issues through various forms of content creation. The students appreciated the overall freedom offered by the subject, recognizing the various ways in which content can be generated and produced.
Imagine the fun and possibilities of being able to integrate your hobbies and ideas to contribute positively to society. That’s what the overall feeling was.
By the end of the lesson, all students had also established a clear process journal and identified problems to be solved around them, and how they could use content to help solve them.
A session well concluded!
EG Mastering an Art Form
Mastering an art form is one of the oldest ways humans have stood out from the rest – and students here choose different forms of art to master and refine.
With so many arts and techniques in this world to learn and master, students were split into different categories based on their general subject of art form – this consisted of dance, sports, visual arts, theatre and drama, music and more.
In EG mastering an art form – dance, students worked in groups to create a dance piece together. Students looked through different forms of dance and their rich histories, before deciding on meaningful and in-reach dances which were the right level of challenge. Students finally thought about the different mindsets and skills such as risk-taking skills which would be required to complete a successful dance piece and began work on their process journal.
By the end of the lesson, students had thought about a dance genre they wanted to explore,
EG Completing an Online Course
The creation of the internet has led to many developments, and for education, it has done wonders. Anyone can learn anything with an open mind, will to work, and access to the internet.
Online courses have become popular to users who want to learn and embrace a new skill; they provide education in what the standardized board does not. And all this learning can be obtained through remote locations, and the convenience of any common space such as your house, school, or office. Many online courses in modern days, there is much to choose from and learn about all from an online course. So how have students embraced the vast world of courses online?
Students began the lesson with thinking about which online course topics interested them most. Was it finance? Business? Coding? Graphic designing? There was certainly no limitation in the number of skills that could be taught with an online course.
In EG completing an online course, students began their task as always, with the all-wonderful process journal, learning the importance of documenting and carefully planning before doing. Furthermore, process journals allow an individual to document every step of the journey, so they can look back on it and recall the process.
In the lesson, students brainstormed problems in the real-world, and/or necessary skills in the real-world. Next, they searched for and/or decided on online courses covering those solutions and/or skills. Such skills include finance and business, designing products, AI, stocks, and much more.
The students enjoyed the process of being able to learn almost anything, and the ability to decode skills they had never been taught. By the end of the lesson, students had started a process journal, chosen an online course, and were excited to embark on yet another adventure!
