Recently, I visited the Wagging Tales Foundation, located near Ghitorni in Delhi, which is a registered non-profit organisation established for animal welfare. The foundation is an initiative by Ms. Malabica Chakraborty and Ms. Mansi Rautela who have dedicated themselves to this cause. Ms. Chakraborty and Ms. Rautela shelter over 300 dogs and 12 cats at their NGO which spreads across two different farms in Ghitorni. In addition to these, she feeds more than 600 street dogs across the city of Delhi. This foundation provides for shelter, food, vaccination, neutering and treatment of all the animals they rescue.

The WTF operates from two different farms, each serving different requirements, keeping in mind the level of care needed. One of them is exclusively for dogs that are unwell or injured, and undergoing treatment, given that these pups need extra care and attention. Once these animals are healthy, they are taken to the other farm where they stay till they are adopted. This farm is home to healthy animals, who interact, play and sometimes even squabble with each other. The highlight of this farm is its well-equipped, in-house medical room where veterinarians can perform surgeries as well as other medical procedures, thus eliminating the need for transporting unwell dogs to and fro from clinics, multiple times. Another impressive feature is the separate section for paralysed dogs, where they are given special attention and utmost care.

The efforts put in by the people who run this establishment are commendable. They need more than 500 kgs of chicken and rice each day to be able to provide for all the dogs they take care of. The monthly expenditure of the place runs between 8 to 10 lakh rupees, which is taken care of personally by Ms Malabica, along with any donations raised through social media campaigns.

They use online platforms such as their website (https://www.waggingtalesfoundation.org/) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/waggingtales_in/?hl=en) to spread awareness about the dogs that are up for adoption. Currently, they have around 40 dogs that need homes. Even their adoption process is as systematic and methodical as the rest of the functioning. Before giving any dog up for adoption, extensive screening, interviews and house checks of the prospective families are carried out. Once the family is finalised, the remaining adoption formalities are completed as per the norms, to safeguard the wellbeing of these babies but their job doesn’t just end there because team WTF seeks regular updates from adopters which are mandatory.

The foundation relies greatly on donations which can be done easily through the various options available such as online payment, bank transfers, google pay, Paytm or milaap (for foreign donors). Details of the same are all found on their website. Furthermore, for people who cannot keep pets at home due to various different constraints, they have a great option of having a virtual pet. Such individuals/families can do their bit for one (or more) animal/s by sending money each month and visiting their pet whenever they can on the farm itself, thus solving the problem of not being able to keep the pet in their house. They also accept donations in the form of bowls, leashes and other pet-care products, which is a great way for even kids to gift things to their furry friends from their own little pocket money.

The dedication and sincerity of everyone involved in this process is truly inspiring. Meeting Ms. Malabica and Ms. Mansi for the first time was so fulfilling that I went back to see her and her pets. Of everything that I learnt from them, the thought that resonated with me the most was when Ms. Malabica said, “It gives my life a purpose to stand up for the ones that cannot do it for themselves”. All their efforts are truly brilliant and anything that we can do to help and support them will be greatly appreciated. I urge everyone to offer help in any form possible.
