Today's MYP 1 and 3 peer connect session in the amphitheater was a delightful experience. The breezy, sunlit amphitheater buzzed with lively chatter as each 8th grader was assigned two 6th graders to have thoughtful discussions with. Paired with two enthusiastic 6th graders, we delved into the themes and plot of our assigned readers, White Bird (a graphic novel on the experiences of a young Jewish girl during World War 2 for MYP 3) and Wonder (a contemporary novel about a boy named August Pullman who has a facial deformity for MYP 1), both written by RJ Palacio. The lively conversations allowed us to explore the intricate and interconnected plots, characters, and messages woven into these captivating novels.
Engaging with my younger peers provided a fresh perspective, thereby enriching our understanding of the novels. Their unique insights and enthusiasm breathed new life into our discussions, making the session both enlightening and enjoyable. It was heartening to witness the genuine interest and passion they brought to the conversation, filling it with energy and excitement.
My team opted to stage an imaginary letter correspondence between August from Wonder and Sara from White Bird. This activity was one of the options provided to us, and I am eagerly awaiting working on our final submission!
Through this collaborative exchange, we not only deepened our comprehension of the books but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among students of different grades. The peer connect session served as a testament to the power of shared learning experiences and the joy of exploring literature together.
