Diversity is when all is one and one is all. What does that mean? You might ask. When all is one and one is all means when people are not discriminated due to their race, gender, sextual orientation and other factors of their identity. To be socially accepted by society is one of the greatest achievements for most people but should it really be considered an achievement rather a norm that should go unsaid? Differentiating one because of the way they look, their race, sexual orientation and gender doesn’t sound welcoming at all.
What does absence of diversity feel like? Accepting one and other and putting aside our labels and stereotypes and getting to know each other for the people we are and not the people we are assumed to be. Being an Indian in the United States isn’t easy. Picture this, When I shifted from India to the United States in fourth grade, I was always known as the brown girl and trust me it isn’t easy when everyone around you is celebrating Easter while you are celebrating Lord Krishna. I would wish that I hadn’t moved from India because of the social norms of society and the barriers that were created between me and the rest of my school.
Why is it important to practice diversity? The sense of belongingness comes when although you look different and are different from others in terms of identity but are still accepted because the diversity of the culture allows everyone a place everywhere. What is the feeling of being wanted? What is the feeling of being needed? Most people don’t feel those two things because they never were wanted or needed but rather looked and laughed upon, is that the example we would like to set for the next generation? Robert Wilison once said “The next generation will always be influenced by our actions” taking that into consideration would we like to teach the next generation to differentiate amongst people and make them feel worse that they are and look different from others? A welcoming environment is what needs to be created. Where all the barriers are dropped, and all is one and one is all.
In conclusion, embracing diversity is paramount. For many individuals, home transcends mere physical spaces; it embodies a community that accepts them wholeheartedly, making them feel valued and essential. As Mahatma Gandhi once profoundly stated, "We will never be able to achieve anything until we unite as one." Therefore, let us shift our focus from the predetermined SDG goals and instead unite in our efforts to foster a more diverse and inclusive society.
